The 2012 Hyundai Azera is the latest release in the automaker's systematic product reinvention. Scheduled to debut later this year and go on sale in early 2012, the new Azera will share the "fluidic sculpture" design language seen on the new Sonata, Elantra and Accent. From early photographs, it also appears to share taillight cues and a panoramic sunroof option with cross-corporate rival Kia's Optima.

It will likely also use a new 3.3-liter direct-injection V6 paired with a six-speed automatic that should offer around 280 horsepower. A slightly detuned version of the 333-hp 3.8-liter V6 in the Genesis sedan is also likely on tap for an Azera Limited.

With the current base Azera returning EPA estimates of 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway, we expect the new base model to return better than 30 mpg on the highway. Expect to see a major revamp to the interior, bringing this large sedan up to date with Hyundai's latest design efforts. One concern, though, could be the rear seat. Although we've found the current Azera hospitable to tall rear seat passengers, Hyundai's new sloping roof designs tend to infringe on rear headroom.

The current Azera, while a fine car, is often overshadowed by more popular choices like the Buick LaCrosse and Toyota Avalon. Thanks to its expected improvements in style and performance, the new 2012 Hyundai Azera should be a much more competitive vehicle. Check back later in the year for complete buying advice and driving opinions.
